In einem früheren Beitrag habe ich Vergleiche zwischen Rauchern und der LGBTQ+-Gemeinschaft angestellt, um dafür zu plädieren, dass wir unsere eigenen Einrichtungen haben sollten, in denen wir uns treffen können. Frank Davis is dead

The English blogger and virtual host of the Smokydrinkybar Frank Davis has unexpectedly passed away. Frank has been tirelessly filling his blog with new information, assessments and opinions since 2009, most recently a few days before his passing. The reason for Frank’s journalistic activities was the statutory smoking ban in Great Britain, which is of course embedded in tobacco control in general and linked to other elements of the health dictatorship. New York State just legalized possession and regulated sale of cannabis, joining at least 14 others where it’s completely legal. Most US states have at very least decriminalized marijuana; others have legalized medical marijuana. The Drug Enforcement Agency of the Federal government continues to consider it a “Schedule 1” substance, ranked with heroin as among the most dangerous. The details have yet to be worked out, but I am not optimistic.  Someone once posted “A Sentence for each State in the Union”. Der Bundesstaat New York hat gerade den Besitz und geregelten Verkauf von Cannabis legalisiert, und sich damit unter mindestens 14 andere Staaten eingereiht, in denen das völlig legal ist. Die meisten US-Bundesstaaten haben zumindest Marihuana entkriminalisiert; andere haben medizinisches Marihuana legalisiert. Die Drogenvollzugsbehörde (DEA) der Bundesregierung stuft es allerdings weiterhin als Substanz der „Kategorie 1” ein, also in die Kategorie der gefährlichsten Drogen wie z.B. Heroin. Derweil die Details noch ausgearbeitet werden müssen, bin ich nicht wirklich optimistisch. Irgendjemand hat mal „Ein Satz für jeden Staat der Union” gepostet. Smoking on U.S. university campuses

I was extremely fortunate to be a college student in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. It was the heyday of freewheeling student life in the United States. After the campus protests and unrest of the 1960’s, students were allowed a great deal of freedom and autonomy once things settled down. Things differed from campus to campus, but when I arrived at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1978, it was quite the swinging place. Ich hatte das große Glück, mein College-Studium in den späten Siebzigern und frühen Achtzigern zu absolvieren. Es war die Blütezeit unbekümmerten Studentenlebens in den Vereinigten Staaten. Nach den Campus-Protesten und Unruhen der Sechziger wurde den Studenten, nachdem sich die Dinge erst einmal wieder beruhigt hatten, ein großes Maß an Freiheit und Autonomie gewährt. Es gab Unterschiede von Campus zu Campus, doch als ich 1978 an der Staatsuniversität von New York in Stony Brook ankam, war diese ein recht freizügiger Ort. The virus, the distance, the smoke

I was fortunate to have been able to squeeze in one last congenial visit to my favorite Manhattan smoking bar, Karma, on March 14, the Saturday before everything shut down due to the Corona-virus.  I cut it even closer with my last haircut, making it into the barber the last day before New York State declared all “non-essential” businesses closed.  They had the great wisdom to designate liquor stores as “essential.” So thereafter all actual social life came to halt.  People stayed home and worked from home if they could.  Others, who were in essential sectors did work, while a … Continue reading →
