It seems people are tripping over themselves to legalise cannabis these days. Everyone is talking about it and efforts to do so are well under-way. So why is another plant, tobacco, still considered to be the most dangerous drug known to man? The Government get a lot of money from tobacco; £13 billion per year currently. Anti-tobacco groups also get a lot of money from tobacco. The Government pays them with our taxes to do a job. Cannabis legalisieren?

Es scheint, als würde man sich heutzutage überschlagen, um Cannabis zu legalisieren. Jeder spricht davon, und die Bemühungen, das umzusetzen, sind in vollem Gange. Doch warum wird dann gleichzeitig eine andere Pflanze, nämlich der Tabak, immer noch als die gefährlichste Droge betrachtet, die dem Menschen bekannt ist? Dem Staat fließt aus dem Tabak eine ganze Menge Geld zu – in Großbritannien derzeit etwa 13 Milliarden Pfund jährlich. Auch Antirauchergruppen beziehen viel Geld aus dem Tabak. If smoking had been invented only today…

The anti-tobacco industry tell us that if smoking had been invented today, it would immediately be banned outright. With the health, safety, food and drug laws we have in place, coupled with what we now know about smoking, there is no way any Government would allow smoking, or the sale of tobacco to be legal. “If smoking was unknown to us and someone invented it today, it would never be allowed”. Wenn das Rauchen heute erst erfunden worden wäre …

Die Anti-Tabak-Industrie behauptet, dass das Rauchen, wenn es erst in der heutigen Zeit erfunden worden wäre, sofort verboten würde. Angesichts der geltenden Gesundheits-, Sicherheits-, Lebensmittel- und Drogengesetze in Verbindung mit dem heutigen Wissensstand zum Rauchen könnte keine Regierung das Rauchen oder den Verkauf von Tabak legal sein lassen. „Wäre das Rauchen uns unbekannt, und jemand würde es heutzutage erfinden, dann wäre es unter keinerlei Umständen erlaubt”. Kingdom Environmental Services – Another Attack on Smokers?

In October last year, Blackburn and Darwen council announced they were hiring a private company, Kingdom Environmental Services, to ‘target litter louts and dog fouling’ with £75 fines for offenders. I’ll reserve judgement on such penalties being proportionate to the crime, but Darwen, lovely little town that it is, does have a serious problem with litter. Just down the road in Blackburn, some areas look like a regular rubbish dump. So the idea of someone finally doing something about this, was largely welcomed. Abfall-Ordnungsdienst – Ein neuer Angriff auf Raucher?

Im Oktober vergangenen Jahres hat die Kreisverwaltung von Blackburn-Darwen angekündigt, eine private Firma, Kingdom Environmental Services, zu beauftragen, „Müllrüpel und nicht entfernten Hundekot“ mit einem Bußgeld in Höhe von 75 £ (englischen Pfund) zu belegen. Es sei mal dahingestellt, inwieweit solche Strafen im Verhältnis zu dem Verbrechen stehen, aber Darwen, die hübsche kleine Stadt, die sie ist, hat in der Tat ein großes Müllproblem. Und in Blackburn sehen einige Stadtteile aus wie eine Müllkippe. Die Idee, dass endlich jemand etwas dagegen unternimmt, stieß auf ein weitgehend positives Echo. Some years ago, I was on holiday on the island of Corfu. I was sat with our host, Dimitri, in the afternoon, enjoying a pint and big cigar, while talking about nothing. Vor ein paar Jahren war ich auf der Insel Korfu in Urlaub. Ich saß an einem Nachmittag bei unserem Gastgeber Dimitri und genoss ein Bier und eine große Zigarre, während  wir uns über nichts Besonderes unterhielten. Urlaub eignet sich bestens, sich über nichts Besonderes zu unterhalten und das auch noch zu genießen. In der Ferne beobachtete ich die großen Berge, die an der Küste von Ipsos beginnen und sich landeinwärts ziehen.
