They are murdering the country I love: that was my reaction to the recent, and rather scary, story of the future (starting from June 1) smoking bans in the place where I spend at least a couple of months every year, and where I have a home, many friends and lots of fun. Gian Turci died 10 years ago

On March 10, 2009, a leading figure of the international antiprohibitionist movement, passed away. The Italian Gian Turci, died after a severe brain hemorrhage. Gian was Director of the International Coalition against Prohibition (TICAP), President of Forces Italy, International Coordinator of Freedom2Choose (UK) and CEO of Forces International. Especially in the latter office he grew to be the powerful voice, the sharp intellect and the organizational nerve center of the global fight against the discrimination of lifestyles and health fascism. Christoph versucht mich schon eine ganze Weile dazu zu bewegen, etwas für die Seite Smokingbandits zu schreiben, doch wie man es von mir gewohnt ist, habe ich die Sache immer wieder aufgeschoben. Das liegt wohl daran, dass ich meine stetig nachlassenden Energien lieber zum Angriff auf und zur Überwältigung von Antiraucherrhetorik einsetze als zu den bereits Bekehrten zu predigen … Es gibt durchaus Sträuße, die ich mit einigen Angehörigen der Raucherrechtsbewegung ausfechten könnte – aber dazu ist auch ein anderes Mal noch Zeit. Ten years ago, on January 27 – 28, 2009, the first (of two) big conferences of TICAP (The International Coalition Against Prohibition) took place. Vor 10 Jahren, am 27./28. Januar 2009, fand in Brüssel die erste (von zwei) großen Konferenzen der TICAP (Internationale Koalition gegen Prohibition) statt. Diese Organisation, im Vorjahr als Spitzenverband vor allem gegen Tabakbekämpfung gegründet, befand sich in ihrer Blütephase. An acquaintance from Germany asked me to provide a comment concerning the Austrian anti-smoker’s petition. We first met online in the noughties, when we both were somehow surprised, flabbergasted, as well as horrified about the strictly choreographed wave of hatred and  destructiveness towards smokers, that had come over from the USA to us in Europe. Ein Bekannter aus Deutschland hat mich ersucht, ich möge einen Kommentar zum österreichischen Antiraucher-Volksbegehren verfassen. Wir haben uns einst in den Nuller-Jahren im Internet getroffen, beide irgendwie überrascht, überrumpelt und auch entsetzt, welche wohlchoreographierte Welle des Hasses und des Vernichtungswillens gegen rauchende Menschen nunmehr aus den USA bei uns in Europa angekommen ist. Fast immer einer Meinung, waren wir uns sicher: Mit der Hetze gegen rauchende Menschen setzen eine Entzweiung der Gesellschaft und eine Zerstörung des bisher gewohnten Zusammenlebens ein, die noch einen weiten und langen weiteren Weg der Entwicklung vor sich haben werden.
